Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born at Lynn in Massachusetts. Her parents were Lithuanian Jewish immigrants Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. When her father passed away in the role of a carnival barker at the age of a young girl, she had to help keep the family going by working as a maid and server. Ruth grew up in a tenement community that was poor in Boston, Massachusetts, where she attended school. In the midst of only two years in school the young woman left to pursue the acting career. She faced many obstacles on her path to success. In New York she was hired to do a photo shoot for a magazine about crime however, no theatre opportunities were offered. In New York, she was employed in a bar as the check-in lady before resigning after a few months and moving to Boston. In Boston, she earned a living working as an usherette during the during the day and then at night was a part of the New England Repertory Company. It was her first job as an actor. She earned a bachelor's degree in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
